In New York City in the year 2085 AD, the unthinkable happened. A monstrous hurricane, fueled by climate change, swept across the island of Manhattan with howling winds and torrential downpours. When the waters receded, almost nothing was undamaged. Skyscrapers were left gaping open to the sky, walls crumbling onto broken sidewalks. There were few survivors, except for several thousand souls who had sheltered overnight in the subway.

This was the Crimson Age of Global Warming. Hawaii, Canada and the western US burned, citizens running for their lives. Ocean levels rose, and Florida’s peninsula disappeared. Texas declared its independence. When New York officially seceded, hardly anyone noticed. Help never arrived.
And yet, the human spirit is strong. A community took hold underground and began to flourish, far from the scorching sun and violent storms. Generations lived and died underground. Eventually, many people believed that humans could never live anywhere else. Taught from childhood that the outside world is hostile to human life, they stayed in the subway.
But nothing lasts forever.
